The RCMP in Fort McMurray, Alta., has arrested a suspect who fled Ontario before making his first court appearance in the death of a Mississauga gas station attendant in 2011.

The 62-year-old gas station attendant died after being hit by a vehicle fleeing a gas-and-dash incident at a Petro Canada gas station at Southdown Road and Truscott Drive.

Abdullahi Mohamoud, 25, of Mississauga, is facing charges of fail to remain causing death, criminal negligence causing death, theft under $5,000 and breach of recognizance in connection with that incident. He was supposed to appear in court on Oct. 17, 2011.

Peel police allege the suspect pumped fuel at the gas station on May 19, 2011, and tried to take off without paying.

The victim, Hashem Atifeh Rad, a married father of two, chased after the vehicle but ended up being run over. He died the next day in hospital.

Police arrested Mohamoud after a five-month investigation.

Peel police Const. Thomas Ruttan said a tip to the RCMP led to the arrest.

“It’s my understanding at this point he’s going to be facing charges out West as well, so once those charges have been dealt with he’ll be brought back here to face the charges we have for him here,” Ruttan said.
